Tomato is classified under solonaceae and a commonly type of vegetables to be farmed in Indonesia. Tomatoes have a lot of varieties from small to big, including cherry tomatoes that are often farmed by city people with modern agriculture system like hydroponic, verticulture, etc.
Most farmers in rural areas farm currant tomatoes or regular tomatoes in quite a high amount on their farms or their fields. In Indonesia, there is not a lot of hobbyists that farm tomatoes on their backyards, sadly.
Cytologically, morphologically, and anatomically, these are the characteristics of local tomato plants in Indonesia:
- Have woody stems
- Have two cotyledons
- Have roots that develop from radical
- Have cambium
- Have orderly xylems and phloems
- Have reticulate arrangement of leaf veins
Another characteristic is that tomato plants have varying height depends on their varieties and caring. A correct dose of fertilization makes healthy, fertile, and strong tomato plants. In addition, young, unripe tomato fruits are usually greenish white in color that will then change to oranges and reds when they are ripe.
