You need to be careful when you pick your fruits for harvest as to make sure your plants, especially the generative organs or flowers, are safe because they are the future of your next harvest.
Flowers of chili plants and tomato plants are very sensitive of to touch be it from hands, frictions, high precipitation, extreme weather, strong wind, or even insects and birds.
Abscission of flowers can also happen because of rough and incorrect picking of fruits when harvesting, which is why it’s important for farmers to know the basics of these things.
Here’s the correct way to pick and harvest chili peppers, tomatoes, and eggplants as said by professional farmers:
- Chili Peppers
This one is quite simple: rotate you chili pepper in clockwise motion. Never try to pull with force because it will damage the flowers around it.
Picking is best done from midday to late afternoon because the amount of water accumulated in the stems is less so it’s not tough to pick them.
Just like picking chili peppers, rotate your tomatoes in clockwise motion. However, unlike with chili peppers, picking can be done at any time of the day because tomato stems are not particularly tough thus making it easy to pick. Do be careful with the flowers around the fruits to avoid damaging them or making them fall off entirely.
Eggplant picking can be done using a sharp knife to cut the stems near the fruits. It also can be done manually using hands by rotating the eggplant clockwise. However, the manual way can sometimes damage the stems.
